This paper analyses the role of students in the quality assurance (QA) processes of the Italian university system by examining the Periodic Accreditation Reports (RAP) prepared by the Expert Evaluation Committees under the AVA 3 model. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach with a qualitative focus, based on a documentary analysis of the RAPs published by ANVUR, supported by generative Artificial Intelligence tools and subsequently integrated through quantitative coding of the collected evidence. Four indicators were developed regarding the inclusion, active participation, proactivity, and consideration of student concerns in QA processes. The results highlight statistically significant differences among the various types of universities, with reference to online universities, which exhibit lower levels of involvement compared to public universities. The study highlights the need to strengthen student participation as a structural requirement of QA systems and suggests possible developments of the AVA model from a more student-centered perspective.
