Abstract

The global transition to sustainable energy sources has heightened attention on biofuelling as a renewable alternative particularly in Africa. Many African States focus on the efforts to promote biofuel production and sustainable energy in order to alleviate energy deficits within their jurisdictions. Laws, policies and initiatives from various renewable energy laws, African Union Instruments on sustainable energy and policies are set apparatus towards sustainable energy on the continent. However, there are challenges requiring coordinated legal, policy and ecosystem investment efforts. This article examines the intersection of laws, biofuelling and sustainable energy in Africa focusing on international and national regulatory frameworks through a comparative analysis. Doctrinal research methodology is adopted to conduct the research. The article identifies gaps in existing laws and policies, assesses environmental and social implications, and evaluates the economic and technical feasibility on sustainable energy in Africa. The findings from the research underscore the need to harmonise international standards, streamline permitting processes, and enhance environmental safeguards within African States for sustainable energy and environment.
