Resume
V.K.
Madan obtained his B.Tech. (Electrical Engineering) from Indian Institute of Technology
(IIT), Delhi in 1970, and Ph.D. from IIT, Bombay in 1989. He was on a two-year (1990-92) post-doctoral
fellowship at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada. He had also visited University of Toronto and Université Pierre-et-Marie-Curie, Paris while returning from Saskatchewan in 1992, and HEIG-VD, Switzerland and Tor Vergata University of Rome in 2012.
He has been working as a Senior Professor at Kalasalingam University since January 2011. He worked as a Professor at Birla
Institute of Technology & Science (BITS), Pilani from 2009 to 2010 after
superannuation from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai in 2008 at 60
years. At BARC, he had courtesy appointment as a professor at Homi Bhabha
National Institute, an adjunct professor at BITS, Pilani, a recognized teacher
of the University of Mumbai,
and a research board member of the Kalasalingam University.
At BARC, he had developed electronics and computer
based instruments and systems for various applications of the Department of
Atomic Energy. He also conducted research in various areas like application of digital
signal processing (DSP) to various fields, gamma ray spectral analysis,
frequency spectral analysis, non destructive evaluation (NDE), neural networks,
population sciences. A part of the research work is significant in the
development of the field of nuclear spectral analysis using DSP. He has
authored/ coauthored above 100 technical articles in diverse disciplines, and
published in journals (including papers still best in many aspects in the
field, and successfully solved recognized tough technical problems like Walsh
deconvolution and applied to gamma ray spectral analysis), conferences,
symposia, a book chapter, and the invited paper for the inaugural issue of
Paritantra, a journal of the Systems Society of India. He was a reviewer for
the IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation, IETE Journal of Research, and for
many conferences and symposia.
He instructed undergraduate and postgraduate courses
in Indian universities, at Homi Bhabha National Institute, and a graduate
course at University
of Saskatchewan, Canada. He was involved in conducting many national and
international conferences, short courses both for academia and industry in
different areas. He had also conducted a neural network video tutorial at a
demography conference in Maryland.
He had participated in three research programs with
IIT Bombay, and a coordinated research program with IAEA, Vienna.
His interests include DSP and applications, nuclear detectors,
nuclear counting systems, nuclear spectral analysis. frequency spectral
analysis, molecular imaging systems, communications, neural networks, speech
processing, image processing, non-destructive testing including Barkhausen
noise, and intelligent and virtual instrumentation.
He is a fellow of Institution of Engineers (India) and IETE, and SM IEEE (until 2012), Executive Committee
Member of the IEEE Bombay Section (until 2011), LM IPA, LM INS, LM NTSI, and LM
ASI. His biography is included in Marquis Who’s Who and other publications. He
enjoys reading, swimming, and listening to light music.

(In this paper digital signal
processing was used in census age returns. It describes a new classification of
digital signal proposed by Madan et. al. and uses that for analyzing population
sciences. The classification has widened the scope of digital signals to
population sciences, nuclear spectrometry, and other disciplines. DSP
application in population Sciences is uncommon)

(The
proposed method is superior and has scientific approach vis-à-vis SAMPO and
other algorithms. SAMPO has been ranked as number one in many international
comparisons since over more than 40 years. For the proposed technique the
principle of the method plays a major role while for SAMPO user plays a major
role. The proposed method takes only a fraction of computing time and memory as
compared to SAMPO) (Elsevier, the Netherlands)
